Made over 5,000 years ago, Egyptian blue is the oldest synthetic pigment humans ever cooked up — and it secretly glows under infrared light.

Around 5,000 years ago, ancient Egyptian artisans did something no one had done before: they manufactured a color from scratch. By heating sand, copper, calcium and sodium carbonate to extreme temperatures, they produced Egyptian blue — what researchers call the world’s oldest known synthetic pigment. It served as a cheap stand-in for costly minerals like turquoise and lapis lazuli, brightening tombs, statues and coffins across the ancient world.

The pigment’s secret ingredient is a crystal called cuprorivaite. When hit with red light, it does something remarkable: it glows in the near-infrared, emitting light invisible to the human eye.

Excited by red light, it gives off an infrared glow — a property modern conservators now use to spot traces of the pigment hidden beneath later layers of paint.

In 2025, scientists at Washington State University, working with the Smithsonian and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, reverse-engineered the long-lost recipe. They produced 12 different formulations, discovering that the bluest result needed only about half its components to be the blue-forming mineral.
