On October 7, 1949, the German People’s Council, meeting in Berlin, proclaimed the establishment of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The body ratified a socialist constitution and reconstituted itself as a Provisional People’s Parliament, turning the Soviet occupation zone into a separate state. It arrived just months after the western Allied zones had merged into the Federal Republic of Germany in May 1949.

The new republic was steered by the Socialist Unity Party (SED), which dominated a coalition of parties and mass organizations. Days later, Wilhelm Pieck became the GDR’s first president and Otto Grotewohl its first minister-president.

For four decades, October 7 was celebrated as “Republic Day,” East Germany’s national holiday.

The GDR would endure for nearly 41 years, its border eventually fortified by the Berlin Wall in 1961. It dissolved in 1990, when its territory rejoined a reunified Germany, closing a chapter that had split a single nation into two rival worlds.
