Two astronauts spent nearly two weeks crammed in a cabin smaller than a car to prove humans could survive a Moon-length journey.

On December 4, 1965, NASA launched Gemini VII from Cape Canaveral carrying astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell. Their assignment was deceptively simple and brutally hard: stay in orbit for 14 days and prove that human beings could endure weightlessness long enough to reach the Moon and return.

The two men lived inside a cabin roughly the size of a small car’s front seats, logging 330 hours aloft while doctors tracked how their bodies coped with extended spaceflight. The mission also doubled as a target. On December 15, Gemini VI-A caught up with it to perform the world’s first rendezvous between two crewed spacecraft, flying in close formation for hours.

Their endurance record would stand until 1970, clearing a major hurdle on the road to Apollo.

Gemini VII demonstrated that long-duration flight was survivable, retiring a key unknown before the lunar program committed crews to multi-day voyages.
