The Irish Free State Came Into Existence

On a single December midnight, twenty-six Irish counties slipped free of direct British rule and a new self-governing dominion was born.

Verified · RTÉ Century Ireland

At midnight on 6 December 1922, the Irish Free State formally came into being, exactly one year after the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed in London. The new state’s founding charter, the Constitution of the Irish Free State, became law that day, making the country a self-governing dominion within the British Commonwealth, on the same footing as Canada.

The Free State covered 26 of Ireland’s 32 counties; the six counties of Northern Ireland exercised their treaty option to remain in the United Kingdom days later. W. T. Cosgrave led the new government as President of the Executive Council, while the writer Tim Healy became the first Governor-General.

Without flourish or fanfare, in the midst of a bitter civil war, the new dominion quietly came into being.

The moment arrived under difficult circumstances, as the Irish Civil War between pro- and anti-Treaty forces still raged. Even so, 6 December 1922 marked the decisive break from centuries of direct rule from Westminster and set Ireland on the path that would lead to a fully independent republic.
