Ludwig van Beethoven was most likely born
On this day · 16 December 1770Bonn's parish register records his baptism on December 17, 1770, which points to a birth the day before for one of music's giants.
Ludwig van Beethoven was almost certainly born on December 16, 1770, in the house at Bonngasse 20 in Bonn, then capital of the Electorate of Cologne. No birth certificate survives, but the parish register of St. Remigius records his baptism on December 17, 1770.
In that region babies were customarily baptized within a day of birth, so the most likely birthday is the 16th. Beethoven himself favored that date.
Baptized on the 17th, he was probably born the day before, a quiet detail that fixes one of history’s great anniversaries.
The son of a court singer, the boy would grow into a composer who reshaped Western music, bridging the Classical and Romantic eras across symphonies, sonatas, and quartets. He kept composing even as deafness closed in. Today the Bonngasse house is the Beethoven-Haus museum, among the most visited music shrines in the world, marking the spot where that extraordinary life most likely began.
