World Population Reached Seven Billion

On a single symbolic day in 2011, the United Nations declared that humanity had grown to a milestone seven billion people.
On 31 October 2011, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) marked the day the world’s population was projected to reach seven billion. The figure came from the UN’s 2010 Revision of World Population Prospects, prepared by demographers in the Population Division using birth, death, and migration data compiled country by country.
The date was deliberately symbolic. Population estimates carry an error margin of roughly a year, so no one could pinpoint the exact baby. The U.S. Census Bureau, working independently, placed the threshold a few months later, on 12 March 2012 — a gap of less than half a percent between the two estimates.
It took until around 1804 for humanity to reach its first billion; the seventh arrived in just a dozen years.
To dramatize the moment, the UN highlighted symbolic “seven-billionth” babies born around the globe and launched its 7 Billion Actions campaign, urging leaders to confront challenges in poverty, health, and sustainability that came with a rapidly expanding human family.
