Data Centers Use as Much Electricity as a Mid-Sized Country

Every search, stream, and message routes through warehouses packed with servers that never sleep. According to the International Energy Agency, the world’s data centers consumed an estimated 240–340 TWh of electricity in 2022 — about 1–1.3% of global final electricity demand. That excludes cryptocurrency mining, which added roughly 110 TWh more on its own.

To picture the scale: 300 terawatt-hours is comparable to the annual electricity use of an entire mid-sized nation. The hunger is concentrated, too. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that data centers can consume 10 to 50 times the energy per square foot of a typical office, and already account for around 2% of all U.S. electricity.

A single building can draw as much power as a small city.

The trend is steep. Driven by streaming, cloud computing, and the recent surge in artificial intelligence, the IEA projects total demand could climb toward 1,000 TWh by 2026 — roughly the electricity Japan uses in a year.
