Verified · U.S. National Archives

At about 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was riding in an open-top motorcade through Dallas, Texas, beside his wife Jacqueline and Texas Governor John Connally. As the car passed the Texas School Book Depository, shots rang out across Dealey Plaza, fatally wounding the president and seriously injuring Connally.

Kennedy was rushed to Parkland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead roughly 30 minutes later. He was 46. Within hours, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th president aboard Air Force One.

A bright Texas afternoon turned, in seconds, into one of the most scrutinized moments of the twentieth century.

The alleged gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was himself shot dead two days later, leaving the case to decades of investigation and debate.
