On April 3, 1882, the legendary American outlaw Jesse James was shot and killed in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was 34. After years of robbing banks and trains across the post-Civil War frontier, James had been living quietly under an alias, hoping to escape the law that had long pursued him.
The fatal shot came not from a lawman but from a trusted member of his own gang. Robert Ford killed James inside his rented home, reportedly while James stood unarmed, straightening a picture on the wall. Ford and his brother had secretly arranged to collect a large reward, turning betrayal into a cash payout.
A friend’s bullet, not a sheriff’s, finally ended the legend.
The killing electrified the nation and cemented James’s place in folklore. Far from disgracing him, his death transformed the bandit into a romanticized symbol of the American West, immortalized in ballads, dime novels, and films for generations to come.
