Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken
On this day · 12 December 1915On December 12, 1915, a forceps-delivered baby in a Hoboken kitchen grew into the voice that defined American popular song.
On December 12, 1915, Francis Albert Sinatra was born in a tenement at 415 Monroe Street in Hoboken, New Jersey, the only child of Italian immigrant parents. The birth was difficult: the 13-pound baby had to be delivered with forceps and was at first thought to be stillborn, an ordeal that left lasting scars on his cheek and neck.
He lived at that Monroe Street address until he was about twelve. The town would later claim him without reservation as its most famous son.
From a working-class New Jersey kitchen came one of the most influential singers of the 20th century.
Sinatra’s phrasing, breath control, and intimate microphone technique reshaped popular singing, and his recording and film career stretched across decades. Hoboken still marks the modest streets and landmarks that shaped him before the bow ties, the Rat Pack, and the standards that made “Ol’ Blue Eyes” a household name far beyond New Jersey.
