Africa is larger than the US, China, India, and most of Europe combined

70 sec read

At roughly 30 million square kilometers, Africa swallows the contiguous US, China, India, and much of Europe at once—yet most maps hide it.

Look at almost any wall map and Africa seems big but unremarkable—roughly the size of Greenland, maybe a touch larger than the United States. The reality is staggering. Africa spans about 30 million square kilometers, enough to absorb the contiguous United States, China, and India and still have room for most of Western Europe.

The fact-checking organization Africa Check puts the continent at 30,221,532 square kilometers, around 12.7 percent of all the land on Earth. Stack the contiguous US (about 8 million km2), China (9.6 million km2), and India (3.3 million km2) together and you reach roughly 21 million—well short of Africa’s footprint, with several European nations needed just to close the gap.

“Africa is bigger than China, India, the contiguous U.S. and most of Europe—combined.”

So why does nobody believe it? Blame the Mercator projection, the map drawn for 16th-century navigators. To turn a globe into a rectangle, it stretches land near the poles and quietly shrinks everything near the equator. Greenland, sitting up north, balloons to look continent-sized; Africa, straddling the equator, gets squeezed down to a fraction of its true scale.

The distortion is not a rounding error—it is enormous. On a Mercator map, Greenland and Africa appear comparable, yet Africa is about 14 times larger. The continent has not changed size; our centuries-old habit of flattening a sphere has simply trained the whole world to underestimate it.
